I use Etrade and Datek, I began with Etrade because I had heard about it, and it sounded good. That was 8 months ago. I got my Datek account two months ago. There is no comparison, Datek is the way to go. Etrade has more frills, but nothing that you can't get on the net somewhere else for free. Meanwhile Datek has the only frills that matter -- real time quotes and instant account balance adjustments. Etrade only offers you delayed quotes and they update your balance every morning. Datek trades are cheaper, get executed faster, and can almost always get you prices between the spread. Etrade makes you wait sometimes hours for an execution, making it very difficult to trade positions quickly (as you can't be sure you have them!). Etrade is inaccessible several times a week during trading hours. Datek has many different servers you can use; if you can't get into one, try another. I'm in the process of transferring my money over to Datek bit by bit, but unfortunately most of it is still with Etrade. I would never try to convince you to use Etrade. It is possibly the worst online brokerage.

The only reason to use Etrade over Datek: Etrade allows you to trade BB and OTC stocks.

I have both Etrade and Datek, and compared to Datek, Etrade Sucks!

Dateks' speed is amazingly fast, and when a trade takes over 1 minute to execute they send me an email stating I was not charged a commission fee due to their 60 second guarantee. Many times I see my trade on the real-time quotes in as little as 3 seconds after I place the trade. I've been with them for about 5 months now, and can't say 1 bad thing about them. They're not infallable, but they honestly seem to care about their customers. They just added 3 more high speed servers to their system.

I'm not trying to sound like a commercial, but they are as good as Etrade is bad. :)

Good Luck,

Kevin

jim,
Do it for the excitement! As a current datek customer and former Etrader, I can say there is no comparison. With datek, you enter an order, get a confirmation, all in under a minute usually - boring. When I was with Etrade, I would place an order, wait for hours for a confirmation, have heart failure when I saw the price it executed at and again the next day when they changed the price...now that was exciting. Think of all the fun that I missed by not having to trade blind during the recent 200-550 point market swings recently. Go for it!!! Etrade is Extreme - it really gets the blood pumping.
