The purists would say that the big tent destroys the party because winning is worthless if in doing so you destroy what you stand for.

Not just that, but by being too big of tent you alienate the core conservatives, by being too statist you alienate the libertarian part of the old "fusionism" alliance. So if a big tent means moving towards the Democrats and supporting their extension of government the Republicans likely lose more votes than they gain.

One of the things I learned in my work life is that you sometimes have to choose between being right and being effective.

But being wrong can mean that your ineffective (losing support and thus the ability to drive the agenda), or that your effective in creating a win for the other sides agenda and a loss for your own.

I don't understand how they think they cold become a majority party without toning it down.

Toning what down?

Good post. I also am more of a pragmatist than a dogmatist. Being pragmatic and effective is better than having a my way or the highway attitude. I know the former is a requirement in the business world and the latter is a quick way to business failure.
