Maybe not. But before the late 1970s, it was relatively peaceful and wasn't in grinding poverty. It has significant natural resources, and was the gateway on a natural trade route. By the time we invaded, there were plenty of people who still remembered that and would have valued a chance of return.

It never would have been a Western-style democracy, but the killing would have stopped.

And, who knows? That fine, black Afghani hash might have come back on the market...
