couple of millennia, some of which it enjoyed TOTAL political control, to clean up discouraging words, damning contradictions and alternate interpretations.

Its worth pointing out that Christianity was a persecuted religion for 3 centuries and had no political power at all (including to enforce orthodoxy) and the Christian scriptures were finalized long before the end of this period. These are historic facts.
