"Before Nixon, we thought of China as we do N. Korea today!"

In many ways Nixon was probably the best president we've had in a long time. Maybe ever. China was the perfect example. He and Kissinger played both the USSR and the Chinese off of each other and sent both down paths that would lead to their eventual total reshaping. Until Nixon, the Soviets were always able to game the US into inadvertently supporting their regime, Nixon showed them their game was up. So they decided it was use it or lose it time, and bet all of their marbles on taking Europe while they could. And the bankrupted themselves trying to do it. China became convinced they could no longer operate in isolation and started to reach out.
