Gee, Alex, I tried to stand up on the soapbox for my turn to speak, but the wood was so thin after your long speech that it just crumbled, and here I am lying on the ground, all dirty and frustrated because it is almost impossible to discuss guns in America rationally. Of course you are a responsible gun owner!!! But that still does not mean that the burglar who steals your gun while you are away at the NRA convention will act responsibly with it. I think some of the larger societal issues--what is better for the most people in a society--colors the gun issue for me. (I think we reached this dichotomy on the fur issue or something similar in the past, where I was tolerant of more control and less personal freedom than you were, and I am not surprised to see it pop up again.) I want to live in a less violent society. I believe that while you may be responsible, many people are not, and that this large body of armed desperados threatens all of us. I also believe that while you can argue that this is a REASON to own a gun, I think it is a what came first, the chicken or the egg kind of argument, and will never really get anywhere. Obviously, if most of the criminals were not armed, good citizens would not need to be either, and since the criminals steal their guns from citizens . . . well, I'm sure you see the circular argument. My only desire is a kinder and gentler nation, with nothing else behind that, so your comment about that puzzles me. My own personal opinion is that it is way out of whack to assume that people in a society cannot have essential freedoms unless they have weapons rights, and certainly we are an anomaly in first world nations. I found some statistics on handgun control in Canada, and they seem to be okay, but the conclusion the writer draws is controversial, to say the least. Read this at your own risk!!! One of the things I have noticed from reading the web on this issue is that it is almost impossible to get objective information that does not take one polarized view or the other:inxpress.net I doubt that it is going to really be possible for you to keep your gun unloaded, or in a locked position in a place that is safe enough, and remote enough, for your daughter not to find it, and still have it available quickly enough to protect you in case of a sudden emergency. requiring an armed response. That was behind my suggestion that handguns be more for sport, and kept at shooting ranges. It is a compromise that is probably unworkable in reality. Do you believe that individuals should be allowed to own military-type assault weapons, and hand grenades? Do you believe that a waiting period to buy guns is appropriate?
