How do you define moderate?

Poor choice of words. I should have written Independent. That's what I had in mind.

being more "pure" (while perhaps toning down some of the antics) might increase their power

Fair point. Could be.

they had become so "unpure".

I agree that was a problem. The GOP became statist. You and I discussed that at the time.

That assumes that getting a majority is constructive. The reason to have a majority is to have power, the reason to have power should be to achieve some objective. If you gain a majority by harming your objective, the majority is destructive not constructive.

Spoken like a true purist... <g>

Regardless, you still have to choose to let some things go and be in power or be out in the wilderness. I'm not suggesting that that's an easy choice. IMO, getting some things done your way is better than turning everything over to the other guys. But that's just me. You can pick a few key things you won't compromise on and not necessarily compromise on the others, just don't make an issue of them. For example, the GOP national purity pledge highlights the Defense of Marriage Act, something which is poking a finger in the eye of young people and moderates. Stuff like that can be honored quietly, not made an issue.

I think you might exaggerate their extent and their net impact a bit

I don't thinks so. You know my politics. If the GOP turns me off so utterly I can only rarely hold my nose and vote for one, I don't see how it can hope to get a majority.
