We still may get there. But, so far, that technology hasn't gone anywhere, despite some very valiant attempts.

Inductively? Not anytime soon. They are just barely able to do that with implants. Non-invasive interacting with nerves is just barely coming into play, but only as an input device. The first wave of Brain Interface Devices have just gotten here. They are probably another 5 years before they are really useful, assuming they ever turn out to be.
