What unique capabilities does the USMC add to the equation? It makes the Army perform better! (And vice versa) Also, the Marine Corps air-ground team is a more cohesive unit than the Army being supported by the Air Force (not to say such support is bad). Finally, the USMC has a mystique that gives it an edge on the battlefield. My father, a naval officer, told me that when President Truman, an Army officer, tried to abolish the Marine Corps in 1947, the Navy saved it. Semper Fi!

Politics aside, it may be worth a look. From an accountant's point of view, it might be worth a look. There are other values, however. Redundancy isn't necessarily bad, and has its place. Also, as I understand it, the USMC is a complete expeditionary military force under one command with air, ground, and amphibious capabilities trained and organized to move out without the necessity of coordinating functions. All the services have unique missions and capabilities. All of them fly airplanes, for example. The strategic mission of the Air Force is enough different from the tactical one of the others that it makes sense, redundancy aside. I agree that all the services should be able to pick up and use weapons, load the same ammo, talk on the same radios, and stuff like that. I'm no military expert. Just have an opinion.
