Why is the worm not showing up on any of my scans?"

Because it has already gotten what it needed.

"I am wondering if this is a new infection"

Could be.

Just did a 5 hour scan by Stinger from Mcafee. It reported 455K clean files.

"of getting bogus Mailer-Daemon email returns but no one knows how to get rid of the problem."

Ok. Actually, what could be happening is that whoever infected you originally has noticed that you have rid yourself of the virus. They are now sending you bogus email returns in the hope of reinfecting you. If this is the case, then getting your ISP to block them is the best course of action. That, and not opening those bogus Mailer-Daemon email returns.

What I noticed is that all the return emails were to addresses that I suspect are defunct now. I know for sure what of the guys closed his business a couple of years ago. I never got around to deleting his email address. So I deleted both today. My ISP told me to change my password and to put it in every time I log-on as opposed to leaving it as an automatic gesture. They claim they are getting other calls from customers of similar complaints to mine.
