<< nearly 88,000 households by the end of this year. Some 90% of the territory's 6.5 million citizens will have access in three years' time >>

two VDSL tranceivers per line, right? that's 176,000 VDSL chips sold by end of year, and 11.7 million chips by the end of 2000. i wonder, is this box an optional upgrade or will HKT install it in every home that has cable service? is all TV in Honk Kong via cable or do they do broadcast also?

Hongkong Telecom welcomes Government decision to grant VOD licence

Hongkong Telecom today (Wednesday 5 November 1997) welcomed the decision by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government to grant the company a licence which will enable it to deliver interactive multimedia services.

Commenting on the Government's decision to grant a Video-on-Demand (VOD) Programme Services licence to Hong Kong Telecom VOD Ltd., Hongkong Telecom Chief Executive Linus Cheung said: "The licence to provide VOD services will make Hong Kong the world's first major city where interactive services of this type are commercially available, affirming Hong Kong's status as a leader in the information world of tomorrow.

"The people of Hong Kong will soon see and experience for themselves the benefits of interactive multimedia services made possible by a new, advanced broadband network. We are confident they will quickly take to these services. The launch of Hongkong Telecom's Interactive Television (iTV) services will bring Hong Kong customers a big step closer to the Information Age of the future. Together with other Cable & Wireless companies - especially those in the UK and Australia - Hongkong Telecom will set the world standard for new developments in integrated communications."

Hongkong Telecom, through its IMS subsidiary, has already invested around HK$ 1 billion in the development of these world-leading services over the last 3 years. The initial offering will comprise video on demand, as well as music on demand and home shopping. Customers will pay an initial installation fee and a monthly rental fee which includes the set-top box. Over 100 hours of programmes, including 60-80 films, will be available on a pay-per-view basis at very competitive rates. Music on demand, including karaoke and music videos, will be available at attractive prices, while access to home shopping, which already includes offerings from supermarkets and children's bookstores, will be free.

Dr William Lo, Managing Director of Hongkong Telecom IMS, said: "We plan to extend the range of services to include network games, home banking, and broadband internet early next year.

"Interactive Television allows customers to view programmes whenever they want, with no predetermined schedule. iTV will bring additional value and convenience to our lives and allow all of us to enhance our lifestyle."

ITV services will be rolled out initially to large private housing estates and densely populated areas such as Shatin City One, Lei King Wan and Heng Fa Chuen. Ultimately, the service will be available throughout the territory of Hong Kong. The broadband network has the capacity and capability to carry a wide range of further services. Hongkong Telecom is planning to achieve a customer base of 300,000 by the turn of the century, with considerable further growth beyond that date.
