Shorting a market in a bubble is a good thing. It helps keep the bubble from getting even further out of control.

As for the carried interest, if you charge normal tax rates rather than capital gains for that, they will just do new deals such that they are getting an actual capital gain.

There will actually be some increase, because they will pay ordinary income tax on the initial position (unless they come up with some clever dodge for that which I can't think of, which wouldn't surprise me, these guys are good at such things), but they would pay capital gains on a lot of their eventual total income.
