I imagine it is useful only for hard pack snow or ice.

Once I drove a Sno-Cat with a similar track system. It drove with sticks like a tank. Hold the sticks forward to go, back to brake. Opposite sticks to turn around.

I had one of only two career motor vehicle accidents while driving government property in that Sno-Cat, both of which were minor.

It really wasn't my fault, as a motor grader plowing the road put itself in reverse and backed up without looking. I couldn't get the Sno-Cat in reverse fast enough to avoid being hit, but I still got an admonishment in my file. No damage to the Sno-Cat.

The other accident was a bent tie rod resulting from a big rock in the bottom of a mud hole I drove through. I got an admonishment for that too.
