Gates sees reconciliation as the solution for Afghanistan´s problems. For the Machiavellian US foreign policy this is good because it put a neighbor in power whom the Iranian regime hates.

This playing with that regiion by the US is not going to end well.

The Russians by taking Menas off the hands of the US makes the situation basically untenable.

For Israel is not good, Menas out of US reach because they count on the US support for an optional attack in Iran.
