Of all the Republican candidates mentioned there Romney is the one who comes across to me as the least ideological.

And, thus, in that crowd, the southern Republican crowd, the least likely to get votes. At least among the top tier of candidates. But then I just read that his supporters packed the halls for the vote.

As for less ideological, my cut on Romney is that he's not a true believer but will pander to the true believers. Almost as seriously as Pawlenty. Who knows which is worse.

Note his very large difficulty trying to position himself on healthcare. The Republican base is bitterly opposed. Yet the plan the Obama folk adopted was largely drawn from Romney's approach in MA. Looks to me as if he will get clobbered in any primaries in which the further right of the party turns out it's crowd.
