HALPERIN'S TAKE: The Nine Things You Might Not Have Expected in New Orleans

1. The near-absence of speaker mentions of the looming Supreme Court fight.

2. The relatively few mentions of social issues – the focus was almost all on ObamaCare and spending.

3. The frequent use of the word “radical” to describe the president.

4. The significant spending by “Evangelicals for Mitt” to tout their absent candidate: free copies of his book, pink piggybanks, t-shirts, a reception

5. The boffo video that introduced Haley Barbour, complete with clips of Marilyn Monroe, “The Wizard of Oz,” and Southerner Robert Gibbs.

6. The instant and intense cheers from the crowd whenever a speaker suggested that the Obama administration was being too tough on Hamid Karzai.

7. The lack of a widespread desire among the delegates to see Sarah Palin run for president, even from her supporters.

8. The apparent awkwardness at the mentions and appearances of David Vitter and Michael Steele (and the room being about half full for Steele's conference-closing remarks).

9. The energy and breadth of the supporters of Ron Paul (OK: not really a surprise).
