Since moderation is now equated with treason by much of the conservative base, that will be a tough road for any would-be moderate in the Rep 2012 primary campaign.

A lot can happen between now and the Republican primaries in 2012 but if you had to extrapolate now to then, you would not give any candidate much chance. Certainly not Romney. If it's a big base turnout year, for whatever reasons, you can send Romney a postcard wherever he decides to retire to.
