Rupert Murdoch has been claiming that his corporation is sensitive to climate change and that global warming will be catastrophic if allowed to continue. It sounds like he is incredibly disconnected from his own News organization. All the Fox News commentators scoff at global warming, calling it the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people. Rupert, CEO of News Corporation, Fox’s parent company released a statement in 2007, that News Corp. was positioned to lead by example on reducing its carbon footprint and use its operation to “reach our audience” on the perils of global warming. Yet, Rush Limbaugh, whose radio clips are frequently used on Fox News, claims credit for being the first to call global warming a “hoax”. Gretchen Carlson, host of Fox & Friends, totally dismisses climate science, by imposing her completely unscientific rhetoric about how big snow storms in the East this winter proves there isn’t a problem. Also, promoting the anti-science idiocy has been her co-host, Steve Doocy, who mistakenly believes that weather is the same as climate. All of the commentators at Fox News ignorantly used the record breaking cold and snow to say it proved global warming was a hoax. One of Sean Hannity’s favorite expressions has been, “it’s cold outside, how about that global warming?” Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are anti-science climate change skeptics and refute it every time they get the chance with their own ignorant versions of weather vs. climate. It doesn’t matter that leaders of 192 countries that attended the Copenhagen Climate Summit believe that global warming is real and man-made. It doesn’t matter to the Foxies that NASA, NOAA, the IPCC, and even both Bush administrations recognize that global warming and climate change were issues that needed to be dealt with on a matter national security and the US economy. If Rupert wants to make good on his commitment of making all of News Corp.’s operations carbon neutral by the end of this year, he should probably have a staff meeting and make his stand clear that global warming “poses clear, catastrophic threats.” It wouldn’t change the ignorance of Fox’s commentators, whose reputations are based on spoon-feeding their audience big steaming piles of lies—but it might make Rupert Murdoch more credible as a CEO trying to do the right thing.
