For me, it is less about justifying what happened, as it is describing the situation as lived through it--albeit very young.

I am attempting to convey the context in which the decision was made. The aftermath response had a tribal feel to it--almost a righteousness--not a smugness, but "justice" about it.

People can belabor it and criticize it for all sort of reasons, but as a "tribe" we accepted it for what it was.

Should we have behaved better--sure. Within the complexities of our both our individual and national makeup whether we could have behaved better (in the sense of whether it was even possible at that point) is to me the more relevant question.
