Yes, I remember John Anderson. Smart man who told the truth. His idea of a .50/$1 gas tax helped him lose the Republican nomination. Bush sr. said: "no new taxes". That is what the Republicans wanted to hear.

I always admired John Anderson. But he was a liberal Republican and therein lies the difference with him and other Republican's.

All liberal Republican's have been forced from the Republican party. There are not even very many moderate Republicans left.

The culture war today, the war between the red states and blue states, Repubican's and Democrats, left and right, is a war between liberal's and conservative's.

And my own feeling is that this will not go away, as it is a fundamental manifestation of our recent realization of our differences in thinking.

These differences have been made clearer with the modern media and internet, focusing on them and analyzing them.

On SI 10 years ago liberals and conservatives posted on the same threads. And fought for ideas. Today each pretty much stick to their own threads.

Liberal moderators will ban conservative's (or they will leave after the 20th insult if they are not cantankerous) and conservative moderators will ban liberals.

And they never agree on anything. Never.

I am not sure how of this is all going to work out.
