...In the case of the Smolensk incident, the pilot had already attempted the approach three times, and each time failed to identify the runway through the fog. But his passengers, an elite delegation of high-ranking Polish politicians, were eager to get on the ground so that they could attend an important ceremony with their Russian counterparts. This was a group that was used to getting what it wanted. In the past, the Polish President had even threatened to punish a pilot who refused to land in bad weather. The pressure was on. Get-there-itis set in, and the stage was set for tragedy...

TJ, your comments all fall in the domain of the possible but not in the plausible. Weather and pilot error cause 80% of the air accidents. Google it if you dont believe me. Spending time on far fetched conspiracy theories, solves nothing. There are countless ways this could have been set up but in the end, the overwhelming odds are that it was a combination of weather, bad decision and pressure to get there.

The only one i would be prepared to accept, at this stage, is what was a Napoleon war doctrine: "Never interrupt you enemy when he is making a mistake".

The Russians think about a lot of things, but remembering the negative results of KAL 007 shoot down, and the considerably less turmoil over poisoned politicians (Ukranine) and dissident oligarchs (Polonium in the UK), I expect they would look for the lower profile methods.

This is reasonable, unless you see Russian as being run by a bunch of reckless cowboys, instead of disciplined martial arts trained chess players.

Fog creation might be hard, putting out a lot of smoke is much more possible. So maybe they released smoke to force the plane to land elsewhere...

Getting the pilot to screw up is possible, but difficult.

However, pilots wanting to land really bad, and then landing really bad... sh*t (pilot error) happens

China Air 605 Overshoots Kai-Tak, should have gone around...
Now, you know Kai-Tak - it is hard to believe the pilot tried to land.

Big List, has a number of people trying to land in fog ...

Russian perfidy vs. Human stupidity.
One of them is infinite...
