"You have the software skills, so why not use them?"

Two reasons.

I've been out of that game for a long time now. I used to do it for nothing more than that I enjoyed it, even neglecting paying jobs to do it for fun. But, after having done it as a professional, facing killer deadlines with the fate of all the drones and suits in the company on my shoulders, toiling away the hours in my cube, developing weight problems, diabetes and high blood pressure, I no longer find it enjoyable.

I'm lazy. Toward the end of that career, I began to see that I was past my prime. Younger engineers were outperforming me easily. I'd rather let or hire them to do it.

That said, I am working on a programming project of sorts. My broker, TD/Ameritrade, has recently implemented conditional orders. Things like, if this event occurs, then do this. I've been musing on how to automate some stock trading with this new capability.
