Here is something I posted on a neighborhood forum in response to folks telling us how much public safety officers risk their lives and how they are worth every bit they get paid:

U.S. Soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq risk their lives about 100-times more often than fire fighters
and get compensated less than half what fire fighters are compensated.

Open it up to the real market and see what those public safety jobs are really worth. I'd bet you could fill nearly every
position for 40% less than current compensation if you held a job fair today.

Oh, look up the mortality rates of convenience store clerks and hotel receptionists. You'd be shocked at
the numbers, and they make around the minimum wage.

Here's the BLS statistics for 2006. Note firefighters and police officers don't even crack the top 9 occupations
for deaths per 100,000 workers (also, note the salary compensation for these jobs):
