Normally this would sound like crazy talk, but it is entirely possible that there are huge short positions in gold for which no metal is available.

Even if there should be desperate intervention by governments, it would be hard to completely outlaw the legitimacy of the claims of those who are really entitled to hold gold. And nothing could be done to seize the underground assets of gold not yet mined.
