Nope. We don't have to give up a thing to be oil independent. All that bruhaha about needing to go back to horse and buggy is just scare tactics. The fact is that the technology exists today to be oil independent and we don't have to give up any of our creature comforts.

Electric cars are coming. Hybrid electric/natural gas cars would do the trick completely. But plug in hybrid gas electric cars like the Volt will get us most of the way there. Most major car manufacturers will have an electric plugin for sale in the US within the next 2 years. Within 10 years of mass production, the batteries will be twice as good for half the cost, making the cares cost competitive with no government subsidies. That will enable the US to dramatically lower our oil consumption, given that our transportation sector is responsible for 2/3rds of our oil consumption.

You are way too pessimistic. Oh and btw, why do I care so much? Well, we just spent $1 trillion in the Middle East on wars to secure our oil. We spend $700B a year on oil money, alot of which goes to fund terrorists and our worst enemies. Our foreign policy is hijacked by our oil interests. Our military is nothing more than an oil security aparatus. Getting off of oil will have enormous benefit to this country in the long run, because it will unshackle us from all the negative things that come with oil dependence.
