<I think the Tea Party movement is larger than it appears based on crowd count.>

Concur. There is no way to count people like myself. I will vote but am too lazy to go as long as there are lots of others to carry my water.
The closest my wife and I have gotten to a TP rally is a year ago last 4th of July. We thought it was important to have a good head count at the downtown Denver tea party. We even rented a room over night as we are a fair way from town. We were prepared to find a parking lot and take a bus, but after driving by and scoping the size of the crowd decided that there were enough people there to make the point and drove home.
