Well, I was trying to go with senators who remained a force in the senate in their 70s onward. Kennedy clearly did; Levin and Harkin are now. As for Hatch, I think his leadership stuff is well behind him. He's on TV a lot but I don't see him getting the kind of senatorial respect he got in the 90s.

I agree with you about Byrd's speech but it's been quite a long time since he was a force in the senate. He and Thurmond are the clearest illustrations of folk who stayed well beyond their time. Lautenberg is an interesting case. He was never a force in the senate and is not now. But is very active. So I'm not certain there's a marked age slow down.
