The D's, being redistributionist, tend to be more unsettled by financial hits to the little guy, seems to me. I would expect them to try to shelter their constituencies from the hits with further redistribution, price controls, subsidized gas, whatever, which would enable fossil fuels to be burned apace.

And it seems to me that your contorted logic is nth order removed from the conclusion making aforementioned logic basically unpredictable excrement. A first order observation for instance might be that said dems in 2009 passed tough CAFE standards on the auto industry, which would likely have a more direct effect on consumption, notwithstanding the natural escalation of demand for fossils here and, more importantly, in the ROW.
