"Our Founding Fathers were just as split as we are."

Now, now, Z. Why do you feel the need to discredit mythology? The Right has built up a whole mythology about the Founders and the Constitution. For one, they often confuse the Constitution, and its framers, with the Declaration of Independence and its framers. While there was some overlap, there wasn't a lot.

And the conditions were different. The small government they claim was the basis of the Constitution was tried. That was the Confederation under the Articles of Confederation. It lasted about 7 years. But, that wasn't because the country was dominated by proto-marxists. It was because it failed. Badly. But, like the antifederalists of the day, the Right refuses to acknowledge that little fact. We tried a limited central government. It failed. Why do they think it will work now?

Remember the Federalists and Anti-Federalists?

Yes, and they both wanted a much less interventionist government than what we have now.

One of the major arguments made by those who opposed the bill of rights was that laying out the rights might cause people to eventually believe that what wasn't laid out as a right was within the power of the federal government, when properly the exercise of any power not granted to the federal government was (and is) unconstitutional.

and the things that improve our country for everyone.

To often its things that get in the way of improvement for everyone.
