When we treat the other guys as demons, our brains storm right over the subtleties.

You've got it exactly. However, it is the GOP has been vilifying the Dems non-stop since Obama won the Presidency. They call him communist and socialist 24/7 on every media possible. They say he wasn't born here, he doesn't share our values, he's partial to Muslims. They call him Muslim. Evangelicals have even floated the idea that he's the anti-Christ. When the Dems pass legislation, the GOP claims they are doing it despite the will of the people, despite the fact that the American people voted for the Dems precisely to get this change and the Dems are delivering on their promises. Anyway, the list goes on.

Why do the GOP do this? Very simple. This current neocon manifestation of the GOP and their ideas failed spectacularly over the last decade. They still want to institute more of the same. The only way they will get to do that is by getting back to power and the only way they will get back to power is to make the American people forget the GOP past failures. That means they need to relentlessly vilify the current administration and the Dems in general.

This isn't a war of ideas. It's a wholesale character assassination that the GOP is shooting for. And frankly, it's painful to watch. At first, I voted Dem in 2004 (for the very first time) because I liked their ideas better. However, now that I watch what sore losers the GOP is and how petty and nasty they are, I am simply getting more and more disgusted by the GOP. Next time around I might vote for Dems not just because their ideas are better, but because the current GOP has lost whatever moral standing they might have once had. I wish the GOP still had people of caliber they used to have in the days of Reagan and Bush Senior, but that is simply not the case today.
