Reagan did? He let the Iranians know we meant what we said, and would do what we said we would do if they crossed the line. They did, and Reagan reinforced that his word was his bond

Nice words, but the opposite happened. The Iranians were responsible for the killing of our 220 Marines in Beirut in 1983. Reagan ordered his Sec Def, Cap Weinberger, to retaliate and he refused to do it. When Reagan found out he let it go.

Comparing current rhetoric to Reagan's response shows the obvious difference between statesmanship and pandering.

We need more of those statesmen and stateswomen today.
