A couple of observations on what happened in Russia (I lived there 1992 to 1997). Currency became worthless. Savings and retirement funds evaporated. Many people survived on potatoes and veggies grown on plots at their dachas. Overall, Russians are much hardier and more resilient people than Americans and most survived. Public services remained intact. I was always amazed at how diligently people went to work every day even though their pay was a pittance. The gangsters came later.
