And if they had let all the planes go up and one crashed like KLM 867 almost did then the EU would be called scum suckers who value commerce over life. Mother nature doesn't have a complaint box so I guess someone has to take the blame and the EU seems as good a punching bag as any.

As for me, I'd rather be stuck in Europe an extra week then roll the dice on my plane's engines seizing up from molten glass and taking a swan dive into the Atlantic.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I think this volcanic activity in Iceland is going to have a long-lasting economic impact on Europe's tourism industry.

I'm not sure how many people are going to be willing to make plans 30-60 days (or longer) in advance for a European vacation when they face an arbitrary flight cancellation due to volcanic ash issues.

And since most of the PIIGS are countries that are tourism dependent, that's going to put increasing pressure on their debt, as well as encouraging CDS speculation.
