Way, way back when I first graduated from college I took the Federal Service Entrance Exam. That was back before they decided that testing the aptitude of applicants discriminated against applicants without aptitude and stopped using the test. <g>

My recollection of the test was a big section where they showed various charts and graphs and then asked questions about what each said, for example, what did it show was the average age of of Rhodesians. There was another big section with short essays where they asked what the point of the piece was, for example, how half the population not being required to pay federal income taxes results in a certain incentive. I recall thinking how incredibly easy those sections were and wondered how anyone could miss a single question. How could you not read data from a chart? How could you not be able to ferret out the main point of an essay? How could anyone not score well on that test? Now I see how. Re the latter, it's by not reading actively and/or by unintentionally or intentionally replacing or enhancing the author's point with one's own perspectives. Re the former, maybe some of it is an undeveloped right brain. The rest seems to be likewise missing the point.

They are OF that religion.

I don't care what "religion" one follows, it should be possible to understand any point coherently put. One can then disagree with the point, but letting the "religion" short out one's brain so that the point doesn't register at all just boggles my mind. To disagree with a point you have to first grasp the point.
