Unions and companies are mirror images of one another -- if you don't want a world with unions perhaps you do not want a world with companies either. Companies use their bargaining power in the marketplace to make money for shareholders. Unions use their bargaining power to make money for their members. A world with powerful companies and powerful unions is a world with price distortions as both use their bargaining power. In a theoretical sense ALL profits are price distortions. That is the world we live in -- a world where power counts for something. There are many roads to power -- some of them are ugly and revolting -- as we have seen in real estate and financial 'services' in recent years. Some seem noble, as we hold doctors in high esteem to the extent that we view doctors as educated, hard working and helpful -- although with our medical system there is growing cynicism about the practice of medicine. The most absurd thing in the world to me is to target grade school teachers for harsh criticism. I think most of us would go insane if we had to do their job -- I know I would. Unions have an important place in this world so long as there is extreme bargaining power on the other side of the table. Get back to me when you find a path to a world where every single person is a free agent and there are no organizations larger than one person.
