The balance of the *loan* is now paid off.

However the US remains the owner of 61% of the equity --- which will need to be sold off over in chunks over the next year or two (as prices come back, to give taxpayers a good return) until the company is completely privately held once again.

Right now though (after shedding massive amounts of debt and onerous contracts, pension and health care obligations, etc.) GM's financial posture is probably stronger then it has been in *decades*.
