interesting article...

my question is why are medicare benefits NOT transferable to other countries, like SS is.....is it because of the accreditation issue?

medical tourism

I just returned from Costa Rica. There I blew bucks with an ADA dentist. The savings more than paid for the trip, and, so far, the results are feeling good.

On the plane another Yank related a story about a relative in Illinois. Facing a $38,000 operation, he had the same done at a Los Vegas clinic for $7 grand cash.

While politicians further FUBAR our system, market alternatives emerge and the incentives to investigate increase.

I think the key to getting more Americans down to Mexico for trips, medical work, or just plain living, isn't JUST this as the article says:

The key to luring more U.S. medical tourists and retirees to Mexico and other Latin American countries will be getting hospitals in the region to be certified by the U.S. Joint International Commission, which establishes that they meet U.S. hospitals' standards.

... BUT it is also:

#1- The safety factor. The Mexicans themselves can't seem to control their own drug cartel BIG problems. Mexico in many places is just beautiful. BUT Mexico in many places is just plain Unsafe. Anyone who goes there these days takes their lives in their own hands.

#2-- The medical safety factor. For instance, many people from other countries don't place the same standards for sanitary health as we in the US have found to be very necessary. Hepatitis of various types is a true health risk. There are others quite rampant.

#3-- Until the Country of Mexico realizes how many Americans truly are serious about knowing who has entered the US and how many of these people are LEGAL immigrants vs. how many are ILLEGAL (as in didn't come here with permission from the US Government) they won't attract as many people from here as they might otherwise. This is especially true when the majority of the US Taxpayers realize the HUGE price tag they will have to pay to have people here ILLEGALLY in addition to their own family costs.

When #1, #2, and #3 are satisfied, I honestly believe that Americans will be more than willing to go to Mexico and will bring a good deal of money with them** which will encourage more business creation for Mexico.

**that is, if the American Taxpayers have any money left after the Obama Socialist NannyState gets through with them.
