The left sees the Republicans as mean spirited for fighting this, maybe the center-left too. The center-right, or even I think the center, not so much. It matters at the margins. Remember that winning by two percentage points at the national level is considered a landslide. But votes, notwithstanding, it isn't helpful to contribute fodder to that image because it affects the content and tone of the debate. Giving the other guys glaring examples to support their slogans isn't good strategy. You can say "we appreciate the problems of xyz, but..." rather than shouting "screw you."
