Yes there is horribly little opportunity, but if you don't have the kids your probably simply dead when you get old.

That sounds terribly selfish to me. People are supposed to suffer and die, if necessary, for their kids, not the other way around. The minimum level of responsibility for having kids is a reasonable expectation of being able to protect them from violence.
