You raise an interesting topic. I also thought Bashar Assad was the way you describe. I was curious whether it was as you noted below cause that is what I always heard in the media. But I found out that he is well liked across the board.

The Alawites are not really a clan or tribe but one of 5 sects of Muslims (or categorized as so) Sunni, Shiite, Alawi, Ismaili and Druze. The Alawis and Ismailis and Druze are a lot more liberal with the religion ie not tied to praying 5 times a day, etc.

Domestically I noted that Bashar is working very hard for his population in education, jobs, reclaiming desert areas, etc. Got this perception from talking with many people on the streets.

I dont claim to be an expert on the country
Just noting what I saw. Living in the area for so long I am atune to propoganda etc and dont feel that people were not being candid.
