I wouldn't say I share the mindset (if I was that determined to have kids, I probably would have done so by now), but I'm not baffled by it either, and its a rather common mindset.

Well strong sentimentality about kids as the norm is relatively recent. I'm not sure I'd say loving kids is. I would think that people loved their kids before civilization. But in the past (and not just the distant past) the chance that your kids (and the others you love) would die an early death was fairly high.
