Why didn't the Greek world abolish slavery or the exposure of children?

Why was it succeeded by the Roman empire which tortured people to death in colesseums for amusement in addition to continuing mass slavery, infanticide, etc on a bigger more ruthless scale?

Why isn't the Greco-Roman era considered part of the Dark Ages? Only a tiny elite was 'enlightened' or even educated, much less scientific. The decadent elite relied on mass slavery and the looting of conquered territory for its luxuries which are more notable than the occasional scholar or philosopher.
