My mother essentially died of C-Diff. She had a surgery and was recovering well - then boom - C-Diff. After at least 3 round of it - she died.

It struck me as something that is very very very hard for and elderly person to shake.

It sounds that in your friends case the decisive event was the stroke rather then C. Dif.... but it may have been the combination, along with the pneumonia, that got her into trouble. Sad story.
Mayo clinic has a decent article about C. Dif. It's not uncommon. Fortunately, most of the time it's treatable.
