Slavery still exists ( antislavery.org ) despite being officially prohibited in much of the world.

This is a short and concise history of slavery. Actually, the Spartan slaves were more accurately described as serfs tilling the land for their conquerors in war.

Estimates of modern slavery are at about 27,000,000 people. The treatment of a slave in Greece depended on the job. Householders were often treated like one of the family--not so some of the outdoor workers. It is interesting that even in the areas of slavery, the Greeks were the first to recognize the natural (as we consider it) immorality of holding a human being in bondage. The school of stoicism preached soundly against it. But they made little headway against the greater culture. And just what did you do with people you had conquered ion war? Do as Joshua or Moses or...

As an interesting note, most of the Athenian POLICE FORCE was made up of slaves!

Yes, it has been a long road to the idea of human rights and freedoms. WE are certainly not there yet. Not everyone excepts that an individual belongs to his or her self. People think she/he belongs to one of many gods--others to the State or some other group. Somebody said that the price of freedom was eternal vigilance. I have no doubt he was right...
