There's all kinds of reasons the state's in the condition it is and just as many opinions of how and when it happened.

IMO it started when Grey Davis (the governor who was recalled opening the way for Arnold) added 43,000 new state workers to the payroll. The largest employer at the time was Boeing with a total of 42,000 employees.

In addition to the added expense of the payroll, there were the bennies they got and the retirement, which in most cases equalled their salary. And, of course, they are all union members and can't be fired and you can't take away their retirement benefits.

Taking care of the state workers is the biggest part of the budget, then all the entitlement programs, and finally funding the prisons, law enforcement, and hospital and ancillary care that the illegals burden the system with.

They can't fire any workers and are burdened with supporting them for the rest of their lives. They can't cut back on police and fire services - we had over 800 forest fires burning at one time last year. The prisons are filled with gangs, illegals and drug-related crimes.

The people of the state might be ready for a Republican, except they still think of Arnold as a Republican even though he's a RINO and the 2 others that are running are tearing each other apart. Not many choices.
