Starting a conventional war with the Soviets over Hungary - close to their home turf - would be tough.

The war had been over for ten years. The Soviet Army was a hollow shell. If we had put an air cover over Hungary and ran a combat command into Budapest though Austria I think the Russians would have blinked. We funded "Radio Free Europe" and urged them to revolt. The chickened out when they did. Disgusting.

Same thing when Khrushchev put up the Berlin Wall. We had a tank company there. If Kennedy had told them to knock down the first attempts of a wall, the Russians would have stopped. They started activity and then backed off for a day to see our reaction. When we did nothing, they went ahead.

But this is all "woulda/coulda/shoulda" now.
