Because all I said was that FEDERAL authority and responsibility for conducting FEDERAL (national) elections is Constitutionally derived. No, that is not all you said. You said "so you would have to be talking about some sort of national law you wanted to see get passed" Without a specific federal law barring the practice you would not need to pass a federal law creating a requirement for proof of eligibility for the office of president. The states would be free to create such a requirement themselves.
