The nasty and brutish past was largely because of a lack of property rights and self determination within tribal alpha male territorial dominance hierarchies. While modern civilized democracies are an improvement, the difference is not great as was seen in the horrors of the early 20th century in Europe [and later 20th century elsewhere]. Just lately there has been news of Americans who live permanently abroad going through the wrenching process of renouncing citizenship, some after a lifetime and generations of building the wealth of the nation, simply abandoning their share of what they and their ancestors created. They must either remain serfs or be cast adrift with NO share of the wealth. It's not right. Their property rights are usurped by a bunch of illegal invaders from Mexico who crash the border and are given amnesty and citizenship. The USA will pay for the process - humans are NOT fungible though it's fashionable to treat them as such. The Islamic boom in Europe is turning out to be problematic with a Van Gogh already dead with a dagger in his heart and a warning to other Dutch about what they can expect from Moslems who plan to take over, as they once before tried to do and succeeded to a substantial extent getting right up into France before the tide turned.
