John, I think the car makers have a problem with lower gas mileage. They can make the cars, but the ones that sell are the plug ugly, heavy gas guzzlers that offer housewives a false illusion of safety for for their kids. And guzzling pickups. I was on the road Sunday in an upscale part of town and bet my companion that the next seven cars we saw going the opposite direction would all be some form of truck. We saw 7 SUVs and 5 pickups before we saw a Porsche. That certainly wasn't scientific, and the ratio is way high toward the trucks, but when I go shopping, I would say the vehicles in the lot average 3 guzzlers for every fuel efficient car.

To be fair, it would be scary driving I-10 late at night with all the semis blowing your Smart Car off the road as they passed you at 90 miles per hour.

John,

That's why I like HXL. The masses haven't caught on yet. You can hear some things from a few people if you read something like the alternative energy thread in seekingalpha.com, but even there it's sparse.

As I said before, this is like personal computers in the early 80's, IMO. For example, once Boeing went ballistic with composites in the 787, Airbus just had to follow. Wait until some company like Toyota starts incorporating these materials into their cars and everyone else will follow. It's the only way these soccer moms can have size and mileage.
