It wasn't called the Internet until the late 1980s.

The "It" was the internet.

What we think of as the Internet is actually the world wide web.

Not what I think of the Internet, the Internet existed long before web pages.

Other features very well may appear in the future.

Exactly, and the use of each of those features, isn't what defines it as the Internet. The Internet is the network of networks (and stand alone computers).
